Computer software for accent reduction
With just a click of a button you will be able to hear the example, record your own voice and compare the two.
Wave form graphs will help you visually identify the differences between your recording and the speaker models. You will see an animated simulation of the production of the sound, showing you the movement of the tongue, lips, and vocal cords. Basic lessons focus on listening and speaking at the sound (or phoneme) level. In the basic lessons you will learn the specific sounds that speakers of different languages need to learn to reduce their accents. The needs of a Russian speaker are different from those of a Spanish, Hindi, or Chinese speaker. You will view video and animated graphics that teach these sounds. You will then be able to play games and complete exercises which focus on these sounds in isolation (level 1), use the sound in words (level 2), and using the sound in sentences (level 3). These basic lessons will increase your intelligibility allowing you to be understood the first time you speak! The advanced lessons focus on the three skills foreign speakers need in order to sound fluent. They are word stress, linking, and intonation. We present video instruction, audio examples, listening games & exercises, and recording exercises in each of these three areas.A brief list of our features includes:

Pronounce it Perfectly in English Second Edition by Jean Yates Click on the book cover to order!
The program which is made up of a handbook and 4 Cds (5 hours and 20 minutes play time) emphasizes pronunciation but also gives attention to speaking, sound discrimination, standard intonation patterns and stress. ESL students, TOEFL and TOEIC test takers, and all others for whom English is a second languge and who want to improve will find the program valuable. The book is divided into five parts: Vowel Sounds, Consonant Sounds, Stress Patterns, Intonation Patterns, and an Appendix. Each sound is considered separately by sound rather than by spelling. There are instructions and diagrams to show you how the sound is made. Examples are given of the sound in all possible positions in a word or phrase, and examples are given oof all possible spellings and sounds.
One great feature of the book is that it uses the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) symbols to represent each sound. Because many English sounds are combinations of other sounds, they are represented by comobinations of symbols. This will help the learner realize the make-up and formation of the compound sounds by identifying their component parts. |
